Los XII Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe celebrados la capital dominicana en 1974, sin dudas, marcaron una época en el deporte dominicano.
Algunos de los protagonistas así lo atestiguan. Atletas relevantes de la época señalan el 1974 como un año que marcó un antes y un después del deporte dominicano, tanto en el aspecto cualitativo como cuantitativo.
Este domingo se cumplen 48 años de la ceremonia de apertura de ese histórico evento deportivo (los XII Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe) realizado en esta capital que tuvo como protagonistas a una generación de deportistas liderados por Juan Ulises García Saleta (Wiche), Virgilio Travieso Soto, Federico Medrano Basilis y muchos otros más.
La figura de Whiche García Saleta es el referente de la época, pues fue el cabeza de un grupo de deportistas que concibieron el proyecto de celebrar aquí ese magno evento que impactó grandemente en el deporte dominicano.
Por ello se habla de un antes y un después del deporte criollo luego de la celebración de esos juegos.
Ello trajo como resultado el centro Olímpico Juan Pablo Duarte, que casi medio siglo después de los XII Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe celebrados del 27 de febrero al 13 de marzo en Santo Domingo, sigue siendo el principal complejo deportivo del país, a pesar de haber sido diezmado por los diferentes proyectos que han sido realizados en sus inmediaciones y hasta en su interior.
Conseguir y lograr la construcción del Centro Olímpico no fue fácil. Ese proyecto tiene un interesante historia para otro gran relato que incluye luchas de la clase deportiva y el arrojo de Wiche García Saleta.
Esos juegos dejaron como herencia la primera gran Villa Deportiva, un complejo de apartamentos a ambos lados de la autopista Las Américas. De esta, apenas quedan algunos apartamentos, el resto fueron entregados a particulares y hasta algunos deportistas han sido beneficiado con ellos.
Los atletas medallistas
Los XII Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe dejaron la primera cosecha importante de medallas para la República Dominicana en esa cita deportiva hasta ese momento. Un total de 16 medallas logró la República Dominicana.
Sólo una fue de oro y fue alcanzada por el levantador de pesas hoy inmortal del Deporte Dominicano, Amaury Cordero.
Otras cuatro correspondieron medallas de plata y fueron logradas por Alejandro Pérez, de boxeo; Justino De los Santos, de lucha olímpica; el equipo de relevo atletismo masculino 4 por 100 metros planos (Porfirio Veras Mercedes –Popo-, Javier Amarante, José L. Oficial y Gil Fortuna) se alzó con medalla de plata y el conjunto de béisbol, también logró presea plateada.
Los ganadores de medallas de bronce fueron: Hugo Natera, Teodoro Ozuna, Alejandro García, San Lázaro De la Cruz, Juan Chalas, José Gómez-Jorge Abreu, Generoso Gómez, Francisco Sánchez, Francisco Saviñón, así como los equipos de baloncesto femenino, los conjuntos masculino y femenino de voleibol.
Testimonios
Amaury Cordero, única medalla de oro lograda por la representación de República Dominicana, fue la figura más destellante de ese momento y no fue hasta 1987 cuando fue elevado a la inmortalidad deportiva.
“Esos fueron tiempos muy difíciles”, cuenta Cordero, quien tiene su medalla en una gaveta en su hogar.
Recuerda que en esos tiempos había que ir a los colmados o acudir amigos para pedir un pasaje para ir a los entrenamientos.
“Era una época muy dura”, remarca.
El doctor Milton Pinedo, miembro del equipo masculino de voleibol que ganó medalla de bronce, recuerdo las XII Juegos como el acontecimiento que “marcó toda mi vida”.
“A partir del 74 mi vida cambio. Adopte el deporte como una forma de vida… estudié y me especialicé en medicina deportiva y eso es lo que hago hoy.
Jamás me he desvinculado del deporte”, expresa con emoción el doctor Pinedo, quien hoy es el presidente de la Federación de Medicina Deportiva y ocupa cargos importantes en organismos internacionales.
Porfirio Veras Mercedes, hoy abogado de profesión, aún es dirigente deportivo y abogado de profesión, también fue protagonista.
Además de ganar medalla de bronce como miembro de la cuarteta 4 por 400 metros planos, fue el atleta que hizo el juramento deportivo durante la ceremonia de apertura de los juegos realizada la noche del 27 de febrero de 1974.
“Los Juegos del 74 fueron la plataforma de donde arrancamos para llegar hasta donde hemos llegados hoy”, cuenta, señalando que esos juegos despertaron la realización de numerosos eventos internacionales y nacionales, además de generar una gran “fiebre” que llevó a la masificación deportiva en República Dominicana.
Veras Mercedes recuerda esa época con mucha alegría, señalando que esos juegos fueron una verdadera fiesta deportiva y se cumplió a cabalidad el lema “los XII Juegos, un compromiso de todos”, para indicar que todo el pueblo se involucró en la materialización de ese proyecto.
Otro protagonista fue San Lázaro De la Cruz, ganador de medalla de bronce.
De esos juegos simplemente recuerda la anécdota de lo ocurrido una noche en el Palacio de los Deportes, donde fue llevado luego de ganar la primera medalla de la República Dominicana y cuando se le entregó el micrófono para arengar a la concurrencia dijo “estoy pasando mucho trabajo, vivo mal y mi casita cuando llueve, caen muchas goteras”.
De la Cruz pertenecía a la Marina de Guerra y tenía asegurado un ascenso. Era una época “difícil”, porque había un Gobierno represivo, por lo que después de eso, no fue ascendido.
