Un complejo principio matemático explica cómo se conectan las células entre sí para formar primero tejidos y luego órganos, y un equipo internacional de científicos lo ha desvelado y ha abierto así otra puerta para la creación de tejidos y órganos de una manera artificial.
Investigadores de varios países han publicado en la revista Cell System las conclusiones de un trabajo, en el que han utilizado la mosca de la fruta como modelo, que les ha permitido entender cómo se forman los órganos durante el desarrollo embrionario y las patologías que están asociadas a ese proceso.
El descubrimiento ha sido liderado por el Instituto de Biología Integrativa de Sistemas (I2SysBio), un centro mixto del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) y la Universidad de Valencia (UV), y el Instituto de Biomedicina de Sevilla (IBiS) -un centro del CSIC, el Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío y la Universidad de Sevilla-, y en el mismo han participado también la Universidad Johns Hopkins de Estados Unidos y la Universidad del País Vasco.
El mismo equipo internacional publicó en 2018 las conclusiones de un trabajo que demostró que las células epiteliales, aquellas que ayudan a proteger los órganos, pueden adoptar durante la formación de esos órganos una forma geométrica que no estaba descrita hasta ese momento: el escutoide.
“Que las células adopten esta forma geométrica se debe al ahorro energético que supone a la hora de empaquetarse para formar tejidos cuando existe cierto nivel de curvatura, por ejemplo, cuando se forma un pliegue en un tejido”, según ha explicado Luis María Escudero, del IBiS, en una nota de prensa difundida por el CSIC.
Aquella investigación supuso «un importante cambio de paradigma,», según Escudero, que ha precisado que hasta ese momento los epitelios siempre se habían estudiado usando conceptos matemáticos para describir su organización en dos dimensiones, algo que está relacionado con la conexión entre las células y cómo se comunican entre ellas para formar los órganos de una forma correcta.
“Demostramos entonces que las células epiteliales pueden tener formas complejas en tres dimensiones, como los escutoides, y las células y los órganos también son tridimensionales, y nos planteamos si existen principios matemáticos o biofísicos en tres dimensiones», ha explicado el investigador.
Ahora, combinando experimentos con tejidos de moscas y modelos computacionales de tejidos tubulares, los investigadores han elaborado un modelo biofísico que relaciona por primera vez la geometría del tejido y las propiedades físicas de las células con cómo están conectadas entre sí.
El investigador Javier Buceta, del I2SysBio, ha recurrido a un símil para explicar el alcance del avance científico que han publicado.
«El antropólogo Robin Dunbar determinó que los seres humanos tenemos un promedio de cinco amigos íntimos que vienen dados por diferentes factores sociales y personales. A nivel celular, nuestro artículo ha desvelado que existe un principio equivalente, concluyendo que el número de vecinos próximos de una célula, es decir, sus amigos íntimos, está determinado en este caso por la geometría del tejido y sus relaciones energéticas”.
Así, teniendo en cuenta una serie de consideraciones energéticas, biológicas y geométricas, los investigadores han descubierto que cuantas más conexiones tiene una célula epitelial con otras, más energía necesita para establecer nuevas conexiones con otras células, mientras que, si está poco conectada con otros vecinos, la célula necesita menos energía para establecer ese vínculo.
Los científicos alteraron el tejido, reduciendo la adhesión entre las células para poner su modelo a prueba y llegaron así a estas conclusiones.
